Envy: signs someone is jealous of you and how to protect yourself

Nov. 26, 2021

Have you ever noticed someone drifting away just as things start going well for you, your good news being met with an awkward silence, or there always being a “but” to whatever you achieve? You may well be dealing with envy. It is one of the most human emotions there is and, according to esoteric tradition, also one of the heaviest on our energy.

Here we explain the signs someone is jealous of you, where envy tends to crop up and what you can do to protect yourself without carrying what isn’t yours.

Quick answer: the most common signs of envy are comments that play down your achievements, indirect digs, someone pulling away when things go well for you and barely hidden glee when something goes wrong. To protect yourself from envy, set boundaries, be careful who you share your plans with and, if you’d like to lean on tradition, wear a protective amulet and cleanse the energy of your home.

Envy: signs someone is jealous of you and how to protect yourself

What envy is and why you feel it in your energy

Envy is born of comparison: someone looks at what you have, what you achieve or who you are and, instead of being happy for you, feels that they are the one missing out. Very often they aren’t even aware of it. Envy doesn’t need bad intentions to exist.

Esoteric tradition holds that whatever we look at is fed by our energy. When we look at something with affection, we lift it up; when the gaze is loaded with envy, that energy weighs heavy. That’s why people talk about “the evil eye”, “bad looks” and “heavy energy”.

Whether it affects you or not depends, above all, on your own energetic strength. When we’re stressed, tired or feeling low we are more permeable, and that’s exactly when protecting ourselves matters most.

Envy can also chip away at your self-esteem: when someone keeps belittling what you do, it’s easy to end up doubting yourself. Recognising it is the first step to stopping it from getting under your skin.

Signs someone is jealous of you

There’s no foolproof test, but certain behaviours come up again and again. If you recognise several of them in the same person, pay attention:

  • They play down your achievements. Your good news is always met with a “yes, but…” or a “well, anyone could do that”.
  • Indirect or double-edged comments. Jokes that sting, compliments that are really criticisms in disguise.
  • They pull away when things go well for you. They’re around in the bad times but vanish when things work out.
  • They take pleasure in your setbacks. Sometimes a smile or an “I told you so” slips out.
  • They compete with you for no reason. They always have something better, pricier or more important to tell you.
  • They copy you – your ideas, plans or style – without ever acknowledging it.
  • They talk about you behind your back or ask far too many questions about your plans and your life.

Where envy shows up most

In the family: siblings, parents or close relatives can feel envious of your achievements or of a positive change in your life, which leads to conflicts and blockages that are hard to put a name to.

At work: competition and professional jealousy are very common. A promotion, a pay rise or some recognition can stir it up among colleagues.

Among friends: a close friend can feel jealous too, even without realising it, and that breeds confusion and mistrust in the friendship.

On social media: negative comments, comparisons and criticism are a constant. The more you share, the more eyes are on you.

How to protect yourself from envy

1. Set boundaries and be careful what you share

The most effective protection starts with the practical: don’t share your plans with people who aren’t happy for you, celebrate your achievements with those who wish you well and don’t get drawn into competitions that aren’t yours. Keeping a little distance from someone isn’t bearing a grudge: it’s looking after your energy.

2. Wear a protective amulet

For centuries, tradition has used amulets as a shield against envious looks. The Turkish eye (nazar) sends the gaze back, the jet fig hand (figa) defies it and the red 7-knot bracelet is worn on the wrist as a reminder. If you’d like to get to know them all, here’s our guide to amulets against the evil eye and envy.

If an amulet breaks, tradition says it has done its job: it has stopped something that was heading your way. Give thanks for it and replace it.

3. Cleanse your energy and your home

When the atmosphere feels heavy, a cleanse helps you let go of what isn’t yours. You can light some incense against the evil eye or a white garlic ritual candle, the most widely used traditional remedy against bad energy. If it’s your home that feels heavy, follow our ritual to cleanse your home of negative energy.

4. Keep your vibration high

Since envy hits harder when we’re feeling low, take extra care of yourself during stressful times: rest, surround yourself with people who lift you up and, if candles are part of your practice, light a protection ritual candle or a Double Charge Protective Shield candle.

What if envy turns into the evil eye?

According to tradition, when envy is very intense it can turn into the evil eye: that feeling that everything is going wrong for no reason. If you suspect that’s what is happening to you, our guide explains how to tell if you have the evil eye on you and how to remove it, step by step, with the traditional egg, oil and incense tests.

Frequently asked questions about envy

How can you tell who is jealous of you?

Look for patterns, not a one-off gesture: who plays down your achievements, who makes indirect comments and who pulls away when things go well for you. If several signs point to the same person, envy is probably at play. Even so, the most important thing isn’t pointing the finger at anyone, but protecting your energy.

Can envy be unconscious?

Yes. Many people feel envy without realising it, especially when they compare themselves with you. That’s why there isn’t always ill intent behind it, even though its effects are felt just the same.

Which amulet protects against envy?

The most traditional are the Turkish eye (nazar), the Hand of Fatima (hamsa) and the jet fig hand. Crystals such as black obsidian, haematite and tiger’s eye are also used, and you can wear all three together on the triple protection bracelet. You’ll find them all explained in our guide to protective amulets.

What does it mean to have the evil eye on you?

People say someone has “the evil eye on them” when they’ve been struck by the evil eye, often because of another person’s envy. If you’d like to check, we’ll show you how to tell if you have the evil eye.

Protect your energy, not your shine

Envy says more about the person who feels it than about you. It’s not about hiding what you achieve, but about choosing carefully who you share it with and keeping your energy clean and protected.

Surround yourself with people who are happy about your achievements, look after your boundaries and, if they’re part of your path, lean on your candles and amulets. Let what shines, shine.
