Mercury retrograde 2026: dates, meaning and how it affects each sign

Oct. 27, 2026

If messages keep crossing, your phone is playing up and someone from your past has suddenly got back in touch, chances are someone will tell you: “it’s because Mercury is retrograde”. Here you’ll find what Mercury retrograde really is, all the Mercury retrograde 2026 dates (plus 2027 and 2028), how it affects each sign according to astrology, and what to do (and not do) while it lasts. But first, see it for yourself: drag the date and watch Mercury “go backwards” in the sky.

Quick answer: Mercury goes retrograde three or four times a year, for about three weeks each time. The current one runs from 24 October to 13 November 2026, in Scorpio (with a shadow period from 4 October to 30 November), and the next one from 9 February to 3 March 2027, moving from Pisces into Aquarius. It’s an optical illusion: seen from Earth, the planet appears to move backwards. Astrology links it to misunderstandings, delays and returns to the past, and advises reviewing rather than starting. In the experience below you can see in real time whether Mercury is retrograde right now.

What Mercury retrograde is (and isn’t)

Mercury doesn’t actually go backwards. No planet does. What happens is a trick of perspective: Mercury orbits the Sun much faster than Earth (about 88 days compared with our 365) and, as it overtakes us on the inside track, for about three weeks it appears to move in reverse against the background of stars. It’s just like overtaking a car on the motorway: for a moment it seems to slip backwards, even though you’re both moving forward.

It happens three or four times a year. Before and after there’s a period called the shadow: the days when Mercury crosses the same stretch of the zodiac it will later travel back over, and then cover again going forward. Tradition says that whatever turns up in the pre-shadow gives clues about what will be stirred up during the retrograde, and that the post-shadow is your last window to tie up loose ends.

There’s one special day in the middle of the retrograde: the cazimi (from Arabic, meaning “in the heart of the Sun”), when Mercury passes directly in front of the Sun. In astrology it’s the clearest moment of the whole transit, as if a light switched on in the middle of the chaos.

So why all the fuss? In astrology, Mercury is the messenger of the gods: it rules communication, short journeys, contracts, trade and technology. That’s why, when it “goes backwards”, tradition associates it with messages that get misread, admin that gets stuck, gadgets that break down and people from the past who reappear. It isn’t a forecast of doom, but an invitation to slow down: review, reread, redo and revisit.

This Mercury retrograde: in Scorpio, 24 October to 13 November 2026

Every retrograde takes on the colour of the sign it happens in. Scorpio is the sign of the depths: intense emotions, intimacy, secrets, shared money and transformation. So this Mercury retrograde is less about cables and paperwork and more about conversations that were being avoided and truths coming to light.

Astrological tradition says unfinished business is more likely to resurface over these weeks: a conversation that never happened, a relationship that didn’t end well, a joint account that was never sorted out. The idea is to use it to calmly close what was left half-done, rather than reacting in the heat of the moment.

This retrograde also overlaps almost entirely with Venus retrograde, from 3 October to 14 November, between Scorpio and Libra. Venus rules love and how we value ourselves, so astrology sees these weeks as especially sensitive for relationships: a good time to work out what you really want, less so for making snap decisions. The clearest day will be 4 November, with the Mercury cazimi.

How Mercury retrograde in Scorpio affects each sign

To find out how it affects you, astrology looks at which area of your life (which house) the retrograde’s sign falls in, counting from your own sign. In this case, Scorpio. Here’s the summary; in the experience above you’ll find your full reading, one for your rising sign and a card to save.

♈︎Aries · 8th house

Shared money and intimacy. Joint accounts, loans and insurance. Avoid: lending or borrowing money without putting it in writing.

♉︎Taurus · 7th house

Partners, associates and agreements. Agreements and contracts with other people. Avoid: assuming you know what the other person thinks.

♊︎Gemini · 6th house

Your daily work and routines. Your diary, your backups and your routines. Avoid: agreeing to impossible deadlines.

♋︎Cancer · 5th house

Love, pleasure and creativity. Creative projects tucked away in a drawer. Avoid: replying to your ex at 2am.

♌︎Leo · 4th house

Your home and your family. An unfinished conversation with someone in your family. Avoid: signing a tenancy or starting building work without checking everything twice.

♍︎Virgo · 3rd house

Conversations, messages and paperwork. Emails, admin and unfinished conversations with siblings or neighbours. Avoid: replying in the heat of the moment and signing without reading the small print.

♎︎Libra · 2nd house

Your money and what you value. Bills, subscriptions and what you're owed. Avoid: impulse buys, especially tech.

♏︎Scorpio · 1st house

Your image and how you express yourself. How you communicate and the plans you put on hold. Avoid: drastic makeovers or decisions made in the heat of the moment.

♐︎Sagittarius · 12th house

Rest and your inner world. What you need to close before starting afresh. Avoid: taking on more than you can carry.

♑︎Capricorn · 11th house

Friends, groups and your future plans. Your plans for the year ahead and the friends you miss. Avoid: arguing in the group chat.

♒︎Aquarius · 10th house

Your career and reputation. Your career goals and your CV. Avoid: resigning or announcing big changes without a plan.

♓︎Pisces · 9th house

Travel, study and your beliefs. Tickets, bookings and travel documents. Avoid: last-minute bookings without checking the terms.

If you know your rising sign, read that one too: many astrologers consider it even more revealing than your Sun sign.

Mercury retrograde in each sign: what it means

Each Mercury retrograde happens in a different sign, and that changes the tone of the review. This is how astrology reads it, depending on the sign it falls in:

♈︎Mercury retrograde in Aries

In Aries, Mercury retrograde puts the brakes on: rash arguments, snap decisions and projects worth rethinking before you launch them.

♉︎Mercury retrograde in Taurus

In Taurus, the review touches money, possessions and comfort: checking your spending, renegotiating material matters and not clinging on out of habit.

♊︎Mercury retrograde in Gemini

In Gemini, Mercury is at home and the retrograde hits twice as hard: messages, admin, journeys and conversations you'll have to repeat.

♋︎Mercury retrograde in Cancer

In Cancer, the family and emotional past returns: memories, conversations at home and feelings running close to the surface.

♌︎Mercury retrograde in Leo

In Leo, the review is about self-expression and pride: creative projects picked up again and bruised egos worth letting go.

♍︎Mercury retrograde in Virgo

In Virgo, Mercury is also at home: details, routines, work and everyday health call for order and review.

♎︎Mercury retrograde in Libra

In Libra, the retrograde turns to relationships and agreements: misunderstandings with partners or associates, and contracts to review.

♏︎Mercury retrograde in Scorpio

In Scorpio, the review runs deep: secrets coming to light, conversations that were being dodged, shared money and intimacy.

♐︎Mercury retrograde in Sagittarius

In Sagittarius, the retrograde touches travel, study and big ideas: plans that get delayed and beliefs that get re-examined.

♑︎Mercury retrograde in Capricorn

In Capricorn, the review is professional: goals, responsibilities and career decisions worth rethinking without rushing.

♒︎Mercury retrograde in Aquarius

In Aquarius, the retrograde turns to friends, groups and technology: ideas being refined and networks being reshuffled.

♓︎Mercury retrograde in Pisces

In Pisces, Mercury retrograde is more intuitive than logical: dreams, absent-mindedness, hazy emotions and quiet endings.

Were you born with Mercury retrograde?

If you were born while Mercury was retrograde, it’s in your birth chart. That’s true of roughly one in five people, because Mercury spends around 20% of the year retrograde. Astrology says those who have it think before they speak, process things inwardly and are in their element during retrogrades.

You can check in the experience above: enter your date of birth and we’ll work it out from Mercury’s real position on that day.

What not to do during Mercury retrograde (and what to do)

What tradition advises against while Mercury is retrograde:

  • Signing important contracts without reading the small print (if it can’t wait, check them twice).
  • Buying expensive tech or upgrading your phone.
  • Firing back at a message that has rattled you.
  • Starting big projects from scratch or announcing major changes.
  • Travelling without confirming bookings and timetables.

What this transit is good for:

  • Backing up and sorting out your files, emails and paperwork.
  • Picking up projects you left half-finished (anything starting with “re”: review, revise, reorganise, reconnect).
  • Having that overdue conversation calmly, and really listening.
  • Closing chapters: whatever comes back from the past usually comes to be closed, not to stay.
  • Cleansing and protecting your space, as we explain below.

And if a contract or a trip can’t wait, that’s fine: life goes on during the retrograde. Just leave more leeway and double-check everything.

Protection ritual for Mercury retrograde

This simple ritual follows the tradition of cleansing and protecting while Mercury is retrograde. You can do it any evening between 24 October and 13 November.

  1. Clear the air. Open a window and pass some cleansing incense through each room, especially where you work and where you keep your paperwork.
  2. Write down what you want to review. On a piece of paper, note the conversations, decisions or projects you’d like to go over calmly in the coming weeks.
  3. Light your protection candle. Place it somewhere safe, light it with the intention of seeing clearly and communicating well, and reread your paper while it burns.
  4. Keep the paper. Leave it beside the candle or in a drawer until Mercury stations direct on 13 November. Then take it out and see what has shifted.

Once Mercury is moving forward again, a small road-opening ritual helps you pick up whatever was put on pause.

Mercury stations direct on 13 November 2026, although the post-shadow lasts until 30 November. From then on, tradition considers the transit completely over.

Does it affect every sign in the same way?
According to astrology, every sign feels it, but in a different area of life. Gemini and Virgo, ruled by Mercury, and Scorpio, the sign it's happening in, tend to notice it most.

You can – life doesn't stop. Tradition simply advises reading everything twice, keeping your receipts and, if you have the choice, waiting until Mercury is direct.

What is the Mercury retrograde shadow?
These are the days before and after the retrograde when Mercury travels over the same stretch of the zodiac. The pre-shadow is a time to prepare; the post-shadow, a time to ease back in gradually.

Key takeaways

Mercury retrograde isn’t here to ruin anything: it’s asking you to slow down a little, reread before you send and close whatever was left open. This one also falls in Scorpio, so it brings the kind of conversations that really matter.

Check your reading, save your card and, if you fancy it, mark these weeks with a small ritual. On 13 November Mercury moves forward again, and so do you.

And if you’re feeling weighed down these weeks, you might like to read how to cleanse your home of negative energy or how to tell if someone has given you the evil eye.
