What does your date of birth say about you? For centuries, numerology has looked for meaning in numbers, and the most important of them all is your life path number. Here we show you how to calculate your life path number step by step, explain its meaning and what every number stands for, and how your family’s numbers fit together. Best of all, you can play with them: work out yours, add your partner, your parents or your siblings, and discover your family’s numerology map.
Quick answer: to calculate your life path number, add up all the digits of your date of birth and keep adding the result until you’re left with a number from 1 to 9. If you get 11, 22 or 33 along the way, they stay as they are: these are the master numbers. For example, 15/06/1985: 1+5+0+6+1+9+8+5 = 35, and 3+5 = 8.

Numerology is a symbolic tradition: treat it as a game to get to know each other better, not as a prediction.
Numerology is a tradition that gives each number an energy and a symbolic meaning. Its roots are usually linked to Pythagoras, the Greek mathematician who saw in numbers the order of the universe, although other cultures, such as the Hebrew tradition (with the Kabbalah) and the Chinese, developed their own systems too.
The most widely used today is Pythagorean numerology, which reduces dates and names to a single digit from 1 to 9, plus three special numbers: 11, 22 and 33. Of all the numbers you can calculate, your life path number (sometimes called your destiny number) is the most important: it comes from your date of birth and, according to tradition, speaks of your character, your talents and what you’re here to learn.
Like any symbolic tradition, it isn’t a science or a prediction: it’s a way of looking at yourself, starting conversations and getting to know yourself better. And as a family, it’s a game that keeps on giving.
Calculating your life path number is really simple. All you need is your full date of birth:
15/06/1985 → 1+5+0+6+1+9+8+5 = 35 → 3+5 = 8. Life path number: 8, the Leader.
29/03/1987 → 2+9+0+3+1+9+8+7 = 39 → 3+9 = 12 → 1+2 = 3. Life path number: 3, the Communicator.
Some schools reduce the day, month and year separately first and then add them together. You almost always reach the same number; where it makes the biggest difference is with master numbers. We use the method of adding all the digits, which is the most widespread.
This is what numerology associates with each life path number. Read it with yourself in mind, but also the people close to you: it’s easy to recognise each of them.
1 · The Pioneer
Initiative · independence · leadership
The 1 leads the way. It’s the energy of beginnings: it decides fast, dares first and never waits for anyone’s permission. Their challenge: Learning to ask for help without feeling it as a defeat.
2 · The Mediator
Sensitivity · cooperation · diplomacy
The 2 brings people together. It listens before it speaks, notices what others miss and knows how to find common ground between two sides. Their challenge: Not forgetting about themselves while keeping everyone else in balance.
3 · The Communicator
Creativity · joy · expression
The 3 lights up the table. It’s all words, humour and creativity: it turns any get-together into a story people remember. Their challenge: Finishing what they start and not scattering their energy.
4 · The Builder
Order · perseverance · loyalty
The 4 holds everything up. It’s the person everyone calls when something needs organising: patient, reliable and feet firmly on the ground. Their challenge: Letting go of control and leaving room for the unexpected.
5 · The Adventurer
Freedom · change · curiosity
The 5 can’t sit still. It travels, tries things, changes plans and comes back with a thousand stories: curiosity is its engine. Their challenge: Committing without feeling they’re losing their freedom.
6 · The Protector
Love · care · responsibility
The 6 looks after people. It’s home, family and beauty: it remembers birthdays, cooks the meal and is there whenever it’s needed. Their challenge: Caring without carrying everyone else’s problems.
7 · The Sage
Introspection · intuition · knowledge
The 7 looks for the why behind everything. It observes, analyses and needs its quiet: behind that calm lies a rich inner world. Their challenge: Opening up to others without feeling they’re losing their space.
8 · The Leader
Ambition · strength · abundance
The 8 makes things happen. It has vision, drive and a natural relationship with success and abundance. Their challenge: Balancing work with enjoyment and the people they love.
9 · The Humanitarian
Generosity · compassion · wisdom
The 9 closes the cycle of numbers and carries all of them inside: generous, understanding and always thinking of the common good. Their challenge: Letting go of the past and thinking of themselves too.
11, 22 and 33 are the master numbers. They aren’t reduced because tradition credits them with an especially intense vibration: they’re the 2, the 4 and the 6 with the volume turned all the way up. They’re uncommon, especially 33.
11 · The Inspirer
Master number · intuition · light
The 11 is a master number: a 2 with the volume turned all the way up. Deeply intuitive and sensitive, it inspires others almost without realising. Their challenge: Managing their sensitivity without wearing themselves out.
22 · The Master Builder
Master number · vision · achievement
The 22 is the most powerful master number: the vision of the 11 with the feet-on-the-ground of the 4. It dreams big and knows how to make it real. Their challenge: Not pushing themselves so hard that they forget to live.
33 · The Master Healer
Master number · love · service
The 33 is the rarest master number: the love of the 6 raised to the highest level. It cares, teaches and heals simply by being there. Their challenge: Setting boundaries so as not to give everything until there’s nothing left.
Having a master number isn’t better or worse: according to numerology, it brings more potential and also more demands. Many people with a master number also identify with their reduced number (2, 4 or 6).
Classical numerology groups the numbers into three families. Numbers from the same family tend to get on easily; those from different families either complement or challenge each other.
| Numbers | Family | What they’re like |
|---|---|---|
| 1, 5 and 7 | Mental | Independent, curious, analytical. |
| 2, 4 and 8 | Practical | Steady, organised, feet on the ground. |
| 3, 6 and 9 | Creative | Emotional, expressive, generous. |
Master numbers are compared as their base number: 11 as a 2, 22 as a 4 and 33 as a 6. In the experience above, the golden lines on the map connect the people who are in tune, and the dotted lines those who clash. Tap two people to see their compatibility.
As well as your life path number, numerology calculates your personal year: the number that sets the energy of each year for you. It runs from 1 to 9 and repeats in nine-year cycles.
To calculate your 2027 personal year, add the day and month of your birth to the digits of the year 2027, and reduce to a single digit:
15/06 in 2027 → 1+5+0+6+2+0+2+7 = 23 → 2+3 = 5. 2027 personal year: 5, change and freedom.
| Year | Energy | What it brings |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Beginnings | A year for starting: new projects, new chapters, bold decisions. What you sow now will shape the next nine years. |
| 2 | Patience and connection | A calmer year for nurturing relationships, working together and letting what you’ve sown grow at its own pace. |
| 3 | Expression and joy | A social, creative year: communicating, enjoying yourself, meeting people and letting your talent shine. |
| 4 | Building | A year of work and order: laying solid foundations, getting your finances and your home in shape. |
| 5 | Change and freedom | A year on the move: travel, change and unexpected opportunities. It’s time to stay flexible. |
| 6 | Home and love | A year centred on family, your partner and your home: commitments, care and beauty. |
| 7 | Looking inward | A year of introspection and learning: studying, resting and listening to your intuition. |
| 8 | Harvest and abundance | A year of achievement and recognition: money, personal power and the rewards of your effort. |
| 9 | Closing cycles | A year of endings: letting go of what no longer fits and making room for the new cycle about to begin. |
In the experience you’ll find the 2027 personal year of everyone you add, their number for each month and today’s number, which changes every day.
Each number also has a colour associated with it, and many people use it to choose the candle for their rituals or their altar: lighting a candle in your number’s colour is a simple way to connect with its energy.

Add up all the digits of your date of birth and keep reducing the result until you get a number from 1 to 9 – unless you land on 11, 22 or 33, which are master numbers and aren’t reduced.
What is a master number?
It’s 11, 22 or 33. Numerology gives them a more intense energy than the other numbers, which is why they aren’t reduced to a single digit.
What is the rarest life path number?
33 is the least common, followed by 22 and 11. Among the numbers 1 to 9, all appear with a similar frequency.
Which numbers are compatible in numerology?
According to classical numerology, those in the same family: 1, 5 and 7 (mental); 2, 4 and 8 (practical); and 3, 6 and 9 (creative). Practical and creative numbers also complement each other well.
How do I calculate my 2027 personal year?
Add the day and month of your birth to the digits of 2027 and reduce the result to a single digit. For example, someone born on 15 June: 1+5+0+6+2+0+2+7 = 23, and 2+3 = 5.
Is the data I enter in the calculator saved?
No. Names and dates stay only in your browser so you don’t have to type them in again; we don’t send them or store them anywhere. You can delete them whenever you like with “Start again”.
Numbers don’t decide who you are, but they’re a lovely excuse to look at yourself – and at your loved ones – with fresh eyes: to understand why your mum organises everything, why your brother needs his space or why you and your partner complement each other so well.
