Florida Water: what it is, its spiritual uses and how to use it for money, luck and protection

Every intention calls for a different gesture. Choose what you want your Florida Water for and get your personalised ritual: where to apply it, how much, the steps and the next ideal day according to the moon.

Florida Water is an alcohol-based cologne with flower and citrus essences. Its traditional formula has notes of bergamot, orange, lemon, lavender and clove, and it smells fresh, clean and slightly spicy.

It was created in New York in the early 19th century as a refreshing cologne, and its name recalls the legend of the Fountain of Youth in Florida. But it found its fame in Latin America: in Peru, Cuba and Mexico it became part of curanderismo, Santería and traditional cleansings, where it is used to purify, protect and bless.

Today it is one of the most versatile ritual waters there is: it cleanses your own energy as well as your home’s, and it is the perfect base for any prosperity ritual.

These are its most common spiritual uses:

• Cleansing your energy (your aura) when you feel weighed down, after a hard day or after being around lots of people.
• Purifying spaces: your home, business, car or the corner where you meditate.
• Protection against envy, the evil eye and heavy energy.
• Attracting money and prosperity, especially combined with cinnamon or an abundance candle.
• Attracting good luck and opening new paths.
• Calming down before sleep: its gentle scent helps create a moment of pause before bed.
• Cleansing and activating crystals before programming them with an intention.

There are many ways to use Florida Water. These are the simplest:

Important: Florida Water contains alcohol and is flammable. Never spray it near a lit candle: light candles or incense only once it has evaporated. For external use only: avoid your eyes and mucous membranes.

This is the most popular use. Do it during the waxing moon, the phase that makes what you sow grow, and ideally on a Thursday, the day of Jupiter: the planet of expansion and growth, worked with for everything you want to grow (money, fortune, prosperity, business and legal matters). Check our lunar calendar to pick the next one.

1. Prepare your space: clear the table, place an abundance candle without lighting it and put your purse or wallet next to it.
2. Cleanse your hands: spray Florida Water into your palms and rub them together. These are the hands that receive money.
3. Charge your purse: spray once inside it and once in the drawer or till where you keep your business takings.
4. Light the candle once the Florida Water has evaporated and say: “I open my hands to prosperity; money flows to me with ease and I receive it with gratitude.”
5. Boost it: add a few drops of cinnamon water, the great ally of abundance.
6. Repeat it every Thursday of the waxing moon.

Doing it for your business? Try Wednesday too, the day of Mercury. It favours business and understanding (communication), and it’s the best day to attract better contracts and clients, or to get stuck paperwork moving.

This is our tried-and-tested ritual to invite good luck, step by step:

1. Create your sanctuary: find a quiet corner, tidy it and, if it feels right, have a white candle ready.
2. Connect with yourself: with clean hands, spray Florida Water on your wrists, neck and behind your ears, and let the scent surround you.
3. Cleanse your space: spray the corners and the entrance, where energy comes in or gets stuck.
4. Visualise what you want: close your eyes and feel good luck arriving: doors opening, unexpected encounters, wellbeing flowing.
5. State your intention: “I attract good luck and prosperity to my path.” Out loud or silently, but with inner strength. Then light the candle.
6. Honour and give thanks: place the Florida Water on your altar or somewhere special and give thanks for what you have let go of and for everything that is on its way.

Every gesture has a meaning; every scent, a purpose; every intention, a power.

For a quick energy cleanse of your home with Florida Water:

1. Air the house by opening all the windows at once for 10 minutes.
2. Spray the corners and door and window frames, working from the inside towards the front door.
3. Mop the entrance with a splash of Florida Water in the water.
4. Seal it by passing palo santo or incense along the same route, once the Florida Water has evaporated.

If your home feels very heavy, you need to go further: find out how to cleanse your home of negative energy and take the quiz to see how much energy it has built up.

The gentle scent of Florida Water helps you create a small ritual of pause before bed:

1. Switch off screens, dim the lights and air the bedroom for 5 minutes.
2. Spray once on your pillow and once on the sheets, from about a hand’s width away.
3. Lie down, breathe in the scent three times and let the day go.

It is a gesture to create calm, not a remedy: if you often struggle to sleep, talk to a professional.

All three are ritual waters, but each one has its moment:
